where error messages kept in magento 1.8?

for instance, error messages on checkout page,

this required field.  please select valid credit card type  please agree terms , conditions before placing order.  please specify shipping method.

any ideas?

you find of these messages in 

js/prototype/validation.js

while of checkout in 

app/code/core/mage/checkout/controllers/onepagecontroller.php

as exception.
